He spends paragraphs just calling people names and outlining how he doesn't like this person or what they've said but rarely does he offer specific reasons as to why he finds someone "odious" or enumerate counterpoints to their hypotheses. Time after time he strays so far into self-congratulatory narcissism with his word choice and style that this book practically grinds to a halt. To begin with, Berlinski's prose - while well-worded - is absolutely dripping with disdain and condescension. so I worked this one into the rotation in the hope that it would continue to broaden my perspectives and help me learn about things I've yet to. I've been reading books on science, theology, various religions, etc. I came to this book as someone who's currently trying to figure out what I really believe about the nature of the universe and the existence of God. I wondered for a moment if they'd gotten a more sophisticated Microsoft Sam or Siri type of program to read this book, so take that into consideration. Also, before I get into the problems with content, I have to say that Dennis Holland's narration is pretty monochromatic and robotic. I'm currently in the middle of this book, but even if I found the rest of it completely revelatory and satisfying I would still be writing this review. With engaging chapter titles like "A Lady and Her Liquor" and "The Pleasures of a Single Bed," along with a new preface by author Laurie Graff ( You Have to Kiss A Lot of Frogs), Live Alone and Like It is sure to appeal to live-aloners-and those considering taking the plunge.įirst published in 1936, with the chilling subtitle A Guide for the Extra Woman, this bestseller became a manifesto for single women (and those between husbands ) keen on embarking on stylish solitary living. Hillis, a true bon vivant, was sick and tired of hearing single women carping about their living arrangements and lonely lives this book is her invaluable wake-up call for single women to take control and enjoy their circumstances. Though it was 1936 when the Vogue editor first shared her wisdom with her fellow singletons, the tome has been passed lovingly through the generations, and is even more apt today than when it was first published. Thus begins Marjorie Hillis' archly funny, gently prescriptive manifesto for single women. "Whether you view your one-woman ménage as Doom or Adventure, you need a plan, if you are going to make the best of it." In this witty, engaging guide, a renowned Vogue editor takes readers through the fundamentals of living alone by showing them how to create a welcoming environment and cultivate home-friendly hobbies, "for no woman can accept an invitation every night without coming to grief." No matter how skeptical she is, Shea knows they are meant to be together-if only he can convince Elli to put her insecurities aside before she misses out on a shot at love. After laying eyes on this feisty, witty, beautiful woman, he feels like he’s just taken the hardest hit of his life. But everything changes when he meets Elli. A brilliant athlete inside the rink, Shea Adler is tired of the life he’s living outside of it: the women, the money, the drinking. Before Elli knows what’s happening, the gorgeous Shea breaks the ice and shatters her world. Until, that is, she meets Shea Adler on a promotional shoot for the NHL’s Nashville Assassins. After enduring years of abuse at the hands of an ex-boyfriend, Elli has been drifting through life in a daze. No matter how hard she tries, Elleanor Fisher never thinks she’s good enough, from her job to her weight to her love life. In Toni Aleo’s exhilarating Loveswept debut, the first in a series featuring the hockey hunks of the Nashville Assassins, a reformed bad boy helps a charming, willful woman face off against the demons of her past. Purchase at Amazon | Apple | Google Play | Kobo Published by Loveswept on October 4, 2011 Primary focus is on Ian Duncross, new tai-pan of Hong Kong's oldest trading house-who's hoping to save Noble House from bankruptcy via a joint-venture deal with US entrepreneur Linc Bartlett, just arrived in HK with his right-hand woman, Casey. No, that's not a misprint: at 1206 pp., this account of one interminable week in 1963 Hong Kong stretches out a conventional but adequate plot-financial deals plus criss-crossing spies-with awesomely tedious, constantly rehashing conversations and, unlike Tai-Pan and Shogun, there's little Far Eastern exotica here to hold your interest while the padding mounts up. There's nothing wrong with Clavell's new "Asian Saga" novel that cutting 900 pages wouldn't fix. The bright, chipper language that nobody would ever hear again announcing the daily schedule while it cleaned up and made the meals that nobody would eat. Two things within the story made me sad enough to show it, and unlike most folks who would think it would be the dog in the story, it was the odd things that set me off – the shadow of the family burned into the side of the house when they were playing catch, and the house itself, still doing its best to fulfill its primary function and reason for existing. I didn’t understand why, but something in this story had found a way through the maze of my mis-wired brain and triggered an emotional response. I read this short story and it did something that shocked me. I was reading high school level novels in grade school, eventually graduating to college textbooks on astronomy and science when I was nine years old. I encountered There Will Come Soft Rains when I was a little kid. For the next three days, in the words of one local paper, Bombay was gripped by “an unprecedented outbreak of racial and political violence.” Fifty-three people would die more than 400 would be wounded. Amid the rioting, police egged on, even armed, Anglo-Indian loyalists. Those gathered threw stones at European motorcades and burned minority businesses. While the Prince paraded through the city center, Gandhi presided over a bonfire of foreign cloth in the city’s suburbs, a symbolic rejection of British imports to India.Īs loyalists filtered home from the Prince’s welcome parade, they ran into the volunteers of Gandhi’s Congress movement. That same day, Bombay saw the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India’s burgeoning non-cooperation movement. But not far from his highly staged landing, trouble was brewing.
